The Fall

That’s what the church calls it when Adam and Eve chose to disobey God. Adam and Eve did not plan to sin. Satan appeared on the scene and tempted Eve to sin.  Genesis 3:1-24 tells us how Satan disguised himself as a serpent or snake, spoke to Eve. He said to the Eve “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” Remember, God did not tell Eve not the eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. God told Adam. Adam told Eve. Just like second hand information the words always manage to change. Eve told the serpent God said, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but you must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.” Did God really say that to Adam? No, Eve added the “you must not touch it, or you will die”. Then Satan causes Eve to doubt what she heard and makes her question God. Satan said “You will not certainly die. For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil”. Satan is tempting her to be like God. Adam is standing right there with Eve as this conversation is occurring and he does not say a word.

Eve looked at the fruit of the tree and saw it was good for food and it looked yummy, plus she would gain wisdom, she took some and ate it. This is sin. Whenever, we think we can be like God, that is prideful. Prideful is having a high opinion of one’s self. It was so easy for Eve put herself above God’s desire to obey him.

She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Adam knew what God said, and he ignored God’s command and did nothing to stop Eve. God holds Adam responsible for Eve’s actions. Just like when your dad told you not to do something, but you let your sister do it. Adam did nothing. Sin has entered the world. Romans 6:23 The wages for sin is death.
